Stitch path

Simple running stitch on a square grid — stitch along every horizontal grid line, offset by one grid unit on alternating rows. Creates a woven-looking surface.

Cultural meaning

The foundation of all sashiko. 'One stitch at a time' — a philosophy as much as a technique. Beginner's pattern that teaches grid discipline.

Traditional region

Shonai region (Yamagata) — same region as Mogami benibana

Boro use

Ideal for covering large worn areas — even thread distribution provides uniform reinforcement without stress concentration.

Geometry

The pattern creates an optical illusion of weaving though it is simply running stitch. The offset creates a 2/1 twill pattern effect.

Ai pairing advice

White sashiko thread on kon (紺) depth indigo is the classic hitomezashi combination. The pattern's regularity pairs with ai's evenness.

Beginner tip

Mark your grid in chalk or removable pen before stitching. Stitch each row in the same direction for even tension.
